The Advanced Water Management Centre has constructed a pilot scale microbial fuel cell. The pilot scale plant was built on the site of the Foster's brewery in Yatala, Queensland (Australia). Brewery wastewater is used as feed.

At this moment, the reactor has a volume of approximately 1 m³ and consists of 12 modules. Carbon fibre anodes and cathodes are used, based on a brush design. In a second phase, 12 additional modules with varying designs will be constructed.

The researchers expect several months of trials before a correct assessment of the technology benefits can be made.
