The microbial fuelcell  and microbial electrolysiscell  (MFC/MEC) research at the NaturalResources Institute (IRENA) of the University of León (Spain) is carried out inthe group of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, comprising a  staff of about 20 people involving academics, scientists and technical assistants. The group has worked in waste management, especially in composting andanaerobic digestion/dark fermentation of wastes, and developingtechnologies for treating biomass for energy production (pyrolisis, gasification and combustion) for the last ten years.

The research interest atIRENA in MFC/MEC so far has been development of new reactors and cell configurationsfor wastewater (urban and industrial) treatment (including two stage process,membrane-less and cylindrical reactors) while generating useful electrical andchemical (hydrogen) energy.

We also collaborate with other groups like Dr. Boris Tartakovsky in Biotechnology Research Institute, NRC  and we are involved in some research projectsrelating MFC.
