A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. M.Y. El-Naggar (NanoBio Group at the University of Southern California: http://nanobio.usc.edu) to investigate microbial fuel cells and the associated fundamental electron transport mechanisms across the biotic-abiotic interface. A PhD is required in biophysics, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, bioengineering, or a related field. Prior experience with biological fuel cells (microbial and/or enzymatic) is highly desired. While a strong background in the biological sciences is required, the successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary group of physicists and engineers on experimental work at the intersection of physics, biology, and nanotechnology.

The successful candidate will be part of a team that investigates the role of extracellular nanostructures (both biological and synthetic) in biofuel cells, while seeking an improved understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and limits of power extraction at the single-to-few cell level. Our approaches include but are not limited to: electrochemical analysis, novel fuel cell design, surface modification, nanoscale fabrication/measurements, scanning probe techniques, fluorescence microscopy, microfluidics, and various molecular biology, single cell, and single molecule techniques.

A Ph.D., a strong publication record, and proficiency in English are required. Preferred start dates range from June to October 2010.
