Hi,
I have read that, a bacteria in its natural conditions, when it transfer electrons to the external acceptors, energy is produced in the form of ATP, due to the inward flow of protons. But, in a BES, when the anode accept the electons from the bacteria:
- does any proton flow occur into the bacterial cell?
- Is ATP produced? if yes, how are they produced?

I am a student of biotechnology doing my final year project on microbial fuel cells.
Can I use Agar Salt Bridge (Sodium nitrate, agar, water (15g:3g:150mL)) instead of proton exchange membrane?

Good Afternoon Madams and Sir's. I'm John, an undergraduate student. I have red the study on Microbial Fuel Cells and I used it as one of my References for my undergrad Thesis.
I have constructed a two chambered MFC and tried to run it and record the voltage. Unfortunately, the digital multi meter gave me a negative reading w/c means that the phosphate buffer in the cathode chamber was the one that produced the electricity instead of the waste water in the anode.
I have constructed it properly and used the multi meter properly also as stated in the procedure that I got from the internet w/c I have attached with this massege . Please help advise me what to do for I need to finish it before the end of february.
Thank you!

I am doing a paper on the use of bacteria and electricity. Can you tell me when the first MFC was made, why the decision was to create it and where it was first used? Also, how does it compare to the everyday batteries; lithium, alkaline, etc. ?

electrode :
May I know Why reasent studies are using Carbon materials on both Electrode? How could it be possible to generate Electricity if the anode and cathode have no potential difference since they are using the materials (carbon)
voltage reading:
I have constructed a two chambered type MFC. I tried to run it and record the voltage reading. I got an average reading of 35 mV in 6 hrs. Is this acceptable?

Hello-
I'm working on an MFC that will require me to take voltage readings every 20 minutes for roughly 2 weeks. I have been looking into multimeters & data acquisition cards to log the data directly in my PC. I was recently advised that the internal impedance of the multimeter/data acquisition system must be at least 10X higher that the impedence (internal resistance) of the MFC. This would mean that the low-cost data acquisition systems are not viable and would record erroneous data for any voltage > 100 mV. I am curious if others have come across this problem, and how it was resolved. Are the high-tech multimeters (e.g. Fluke or Keithley) the only way to accurately record voltage from the MFCs? Does anyone have reviews of the multimeters or data acquisitons cards they have used? Thanks very much.

Hello I'm a high school student and I'm going to be constructing an MFC for a science project. I've been reading about some homemade MFCs and I was wondering if there are any precautions I should take while making it so as to ensure it works properly. I'm creating a 2 chambered MFC and using wastewater from a nearby water source. A few questions I'm considering for the research are which types of microorganisms are most effective in producing the most electric current and wastewater from what area of the water source produces the most electric current. Any tips on building and testing MFCs would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi all, i am arzu from Turkey i am working on MFC's, My reactors have two chamber which connected with PEM, and i used electrode from carbon paper. I can not measure current value and my resistance is 1000 ohms, may not be current from high internal resistance? i need some informations about internal resistance. please leave a comment..
