why voltage generation and sudden continuous drop-out PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 February 2012

In my experiment a dual chambered MFC:

1. Open circuit Potential noted was0.71 volts. When measured for CCVand current at 10 K ohm, it showed 2-1 andfinally O.8 mAmps with large fluctuations along 0.68~0.63Volts of CCV with continuous downfall and somewhatstability.

Possible Reasons:May be due to the stored potential (0.71Volts asOCP--> Infinite resistance between two terminals cathode and anode, there remains no current flow), the cell acted fastidiously as faras current generation was concerned. But why there is continuousdownfall in the recorded CCV potential when there is load connectedin the circuit?. It seems as if the load is given permanently, theCCV will reach to its minimal point(could be 0 even). But if ithappens, then cell won't produce sustained energy for long time.

2.OCV was 0.70volts. Current recorded was in accordance with the firstreading. At 1 Kohm, CCV was around 0.46~0.42V with continuous rapid downfall with increasedfluctuated 3-2-1 and final0.7mAmps current. Final droppped OCVafter recordings were 0.32V.

Question:Can you justify the reasons of this endless downfall in CCV andcurrent?. And why its too hard to recover the same previous OCVquickly. It takes around 30 mins or above to reach the same previousOCV.

Is copper in electrodes being consumed to increase voltage? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 17 December 2011
I made a simple single membraneless chamber fuel cell.  For economics and ease, I started with aluminum foil anode and cathode.  The greatest voltage I read on my simple digital multi-meter was ~200mV.  After further reading I found some carbon replacement brushes with copper leads.  I attached insulated copper wire and tried to minimize the copper exposed.  I used these for both the cathode and anode and measured a voltage up to ~500mV.  I am pleased with this increase in performance, however I'm curious if the copper is being consumed to create this added voltage.  Am I correct in assuming that as long as the cathode and anode are the same material, that the voltage increase is not caused by the consumption of the electrode material?  The medium (correct term?) is dirt, vinegar, sugar.  If my assumption is correct, can I attached the carbon/copper to aluminum foil to increase my surface area to increase current?

what membrane or sealant to use ? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 12 November 2011
hi, I am an undergrad student from india. I am currently doing my final yr project on mfc technology. I am using semi-solid sludge with waste water as anode feed. I am using an agar bridge betw anode and cathode. now I dont want the bacteria to degrade the agar plus I want protons to flow through to the cathode from anode. What kind of membrane should I use to prevent fouling of the connecting agar by the bacteria ? Nafion is unavailable or very costly at my place, I can't afford it. Any suggestions please?

Does the size of the electrode makes a difference? PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 28 October 2011

Hi, I am building a MFC for a science fair project. I found some instructions online that I will use to design my MFC. However if I follow the exact instructions, it is going to get very expensive. I would experiment with it more if I could, but I am using carbon cloth and like I said, it is expensive. I was just wondering if anyone knew if the size of the electrode makes a significant difference in the results. Thanks!

Hi,

I am an ungraduated student from Brazil and i want to do some research in this area, i am sure that in my country many studies are being done. Anyway, where can i find present articles about? Please if anyone knows, send me a link, thanks.

Hi,

I am from India, doing a project in MFC.
What is the differnence between culture medium and substrate?
What are the steps I have to follow to prepare fuel in anode?

please reply me
