Do we have any idea what MFCs cost on a per-watt basis? I know that thin-film solar panels are approaching $1 per watt. I'm interested in the comparison. I understand that MFCs still have a long way to go.

I read a paper which deals in part this by Ashutosh Patra "Low-Cost, Single-Chambered Microbial Fuel Cells for Harvesting Energy and Cleansing Wastewater" May be of use.

Based on lab-scale, single chamber MFC performance reported by Liu et al. (2004; DOI: 10.1021/es0499344) using domestic wastewater and Toray / XC-72 membranes, we've got:
Power density = 150 mW/m2
Volume (MFC): 28 mL = 28 x 10^-6 m3
A/V-ratio: 25 m2/m3
==> Anode surface area (single chamber) = A/V x V = 7 x 10^-4 m2
==> Power = 0.165 mW

Cost of single-chamber fuel cell: (lab-scale)
Toray paper (10x10 cm; http://www.cleanfuelcellenergy.com/): US-$ 11
XC-72 (-"-): US-$65
Others (perspex, glue, wire): US-$ 25
Total = US-$ 100

Cost per Watt = US-$ 600 / mW
