The past years, various new MFC designs have evolved. A first class of designs are designed purely for research goals and are as a consequence difficult to implement in practice. Nevertheless, they are highly suitable for research purposes.

Research type MFCs are easy to construct and are used for short experiments. They are suited to investigate specific microbial processes or new materials. Due to their periodical batch operation, they are not appropriate for long term operation. In most cases, the electrochemical design is not optimized and does not allow high maximum power generation.

Below you find a gallery with some miniaturized MFC designs. Click on the thumbnails to enlarge the pictures.
