CALLFOR PAPERS

EnergySustainability of the Water Infrastructure Using Microbial Fuel Cell BasedTechnologies

239th American Chemical Society (ACS) NationalMeeting,

San Francisco, CA, March 21-25, 2010
Division of Environmental Chemistry

The water infrastructure in the USA requires ~3-5% of our annualelectricity production, with ~1.5% of the electricity used for wastewatertreatment. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) based technologies offer the potential notonly for recovery energy from wastewaters, but also to make wastewatertreatment plants net energy producers. Bioenergy can be obtained using MFCtechnologies in several forms, including electricity, hydrogen, or methanegases. The purpose of this session will be to explore advances in differenttypes of MFCs, microbial electrolysis cells, and other bioelectrochemical andmembrane technologies that show promise for energy recovery from wastewaters, waste biomass such as cellulosic materials, salinity gradients, and waste heat.

The following invited speakers thatwill be participating in this session include: Ken Nealson (University of SouthernCalifornia); Yuri Gorby(J Craig Venter Institute); Derek Lovley (Universityof Amherst); Hong Liu (Oregon StateUniversity); Lars Angenent (Cornell University);César Torres (ArizonaState University);and the conference organizers.

Technical abstracts are solicited for platform or posterpresentation at this session. To be considered for a presentation, pleasesubmit a SHORT ABSTRACT (150words) by the submission deadlineof October 19, 2009 usingthe online system http://abstracts.acs.org. You can sign in using your ACS ID. Go to the Environmental Chemistry link tofind the session, and choose the session title listed above.
