Proton exchange membrane

I am a student of biotechnology doing my final year project on microbial fuel cells.
Can I use Agar Salt Bridge (Sodium nitrate, agar, water (15g:3g:150mL)) instead of proton exchange membrane?

instead of pem can we use a porous pot? If yes what should be the optimum pore size?
